Description

Function and technical context

The Radice brand shaft anode for 30 mm shafts is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to be installed on the boat's propulsion shaft. Its function is to act as a sacrificial metal, oxidizing in a controlled manner to protect the shaft, propeller hub and other submerged metal components against galvanic corrosion caused by the action of salt, brackish or fresh water. It works within the transmission and propulsion system, in the submerged exterior area of the hull, being the first defense barrier against electrochemical deterioration that affects stainless steel and naval bronze. Without adequate cathodic protection, the shaft can suffer pitting, material loss and, in advanced cases, structural failures that compromise driveline integrity and navigational safety.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be visually inspected at least once per season, usually during the annual vessel beaching. The clearest sign that they require replacement is when they have lost between 50 and 60% of their mass, have a very worn irregular shape or have partially detached from the shaft, which indicates that they have completed their protection cycle. As a preventive rule recommended by naval mechanics, it is advisable to replace the shaft anodes at the beginning of each season without waiting for complete wear, since an exhausted anode leaves the shaft unprotected and exposed to accelerated corrosion that can lead to costly repairs of the shaft or line bearings.
