Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements specifically designed to be mounted on the tailshaft of the vessel, forming an electrochemical barrier that sacrifices its own material to protect the propulsion shaft, propeller and nearby metal fittings from galvanic corrosion. This 40mm anode is designed for Beneteau boats with shafts of that size, fitting precisely into the indicated diameter to ensure effective electrical contact and continuous protective coverage. Without an anodic protection that is correctly sized and in good condition, the stainless steel or bronze shaft can suffer pitting, loss of section and, in serious cases, structural failure during navigation, with the consequent risk of water entering through the stuffing box and failure of the propulsion line.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the shaft anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced before the base metal is exposed. The usual practice in nautical maintenance is to inspect and renew the anodes at each annual beaching or each navigation season, since their useful life depends directly on the aggressiveness of the water (salt, brackish or fresh), the galvanic currents of the pontoon and the hours of use. Preventatively replacing the anode at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid costly damage to the shaft, propeller and stuffing box.
