Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements specifically designed to be installed around the tail shaft of the vessel, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice against galvanic corrosion. This 35 mm zinc anode is designed for Beneteau boats with propulsion shafts of that diameter, protecting them from electrolytic attack caused by the potential difference between different metals submerged in salt or brackish water. Without adequate cathodic protection on the shaft, the structural metal of the transmission line is exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the integrity of the shaft, stuffing box and water bearings. The reference CMLAEC3500 uniquely identifies this component to facilitate correct replacement without compatibility errors.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that a shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is visible mass loss: when the anode has consumed more than 50% of its volume, it has ceased to protect effectively and should be replaced immediately. The standard recommendation in nautical is to inspect and replace the shaft anodes at least once a season, or even every six months in areas with high water conductivity or with the presence of erratic currents on the dock. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid serious damage to the propulsion shaft, whose repair or replacement involves costs much higher than those of a simple sacrificial part.
