Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes like this Arneson anode (ref. CMARNSMALLA) are part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as an electrochemical barrier between submerged metal parts and salt, brackish or fresh water. Their role is to sacrifice themselves through controlled oxidation to protect critical components of the Arneson Surface Drive transmission – shafts, propellers, couplings and tail mounts – from galvanic corrosion. Without an anode in good condition, corrosion directly attacks the structural parts of the propulsion system, which can lead to irreversible damage to the transmission shaft or the drive body, with the consequent high repair cost and the risk of being left without propulsion while sailing.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that a sacrificial anode needs replacement is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is compromised. In saltwater environments with high conductivity, it is recommended to inspect and renew the anodes at least once per nautical season, or every time the boat is beached for inspection; In waters with high saline content or near ports with intense electrical activity, the frequency may be higher. Replacing the anode preventively at each seasonal grounding is the most effective and economical measure to avoid major repairs to the Arneson Surface Drive system.
