Description

Function and technical context

The Arneson transmission sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection component that acts as a negative electrode in the vessel's galvanic protection system. Its mission is to electrochemically sacrifice itself in place of metal parts of higher structural value - such as the axle, surface drive housing or bronze and stainless steel hardware - when these are exposed to salt or brackish water. The Arneson Surface Drive transmission is especially susceptible to galvanic corrosion due to the combination of different metals in an aggressive marine environment, so keeping the anode in good condition is essential to preserve the integrity of the entire propulsion unit. A worn or missing anode leaves critical metal parts unprotected, accelerating corrosion and potentially causing structural failures that require costly repair.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a completely irregular surface, or have been reduced to a metal core with no active material. In boats that remain in the water continuously or frequently sail in waters with high salinity, the useful life can be significantly reduced, so a review every three or four months is recommended. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid serious damage to the Arneson transmission, whose repair or replacement costs much more than that of a simple replacement anode.
