Function and technical context

Marlin Universal Primer acts as an adhesion layer between the hull of the boat and the antifouling or protective finishes that are subsequently applied, guaranteeing a firm and long-lasting bond on fiberglass, wood, steel and aluminum substrates. It works on the surface protection system of the hull, being the fundamental previous step before any painting cycle, both in pleasure boats and in work lengths. Its universal formulation allows it to be used on old paint layers or on new surfaces without the need to completely strip the substrate, which greatly speeds up laying work. If omitted or applied incorrectly, subsequent finishes lose adhesion and peel off prematurely, leaving the hull exposed to moisture, corrosion and biofouling.

When to replace or apply this primer?

The clearest sign that the previous primer cycle has failed is the appearance of blisters, chips or irregular matte areas on the antifouling during the beaching inspection, indicating loss of adhesion at the hull-paint interface. It is recommended to apply a new coat of universal primer in each complete laying cycle or whenever you intervene on areas where the antifouling has reached the substrate; In seasonal closures that involve thorough sanding, application is mandatory before repainting. Applying the primer preventively in each complete repainting process avoids costly total stripping work and significantly extends the useful life of the helmet protection system.
