PISTON RINGS 12140-94400
Description
Function and technical context
Piston rings are part of the moving assembly of the outboard engine and play an essential function within the combustion system. Its purpose is to seal the combustion chamber between the piston and the cylinder wall, preventing gas leakage into the crankcase and guaranteeing the compression necessary for optimal engine performance. At the same time, they regulate the distribution of lubricating oil on the cylinder wall and transfer the heat generated during combustion from the piston to the engine block. When the rings wear out or lose tension, compression drops, oil consumption increases and the engine progressively loses power, which can lead to severe damage to the cylinder-piston group if action is not taken in time.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of worn rings include bluish smoke from the exhaust (a clear sign of oil burning), noticeable loss of compression when testing with a compression gauge, difficulty starting when cold, and excessive lubricant consumption between service checks. In engines with intensive use, it is recommended to inspect the condition of the rings when disassembling the piston-cylinder group, generally coinciding with a general inspection or after detecting a compression drop; In engines for recreational use, it is advisable to check them at each seasonal inspection if the engine exceeds 400-500 hours of service. Renewing the piston rings at the right time prolongs the life of the engine and avoids major repairs such as grinding or replacing the cylinder.
