Function and Technical Context

This aluminum sacrificial anode protects the drive shaft of OMC outboard motors against galvanic corrosion, acting as a sacrificial electrode that degrades instead of the metal components of the bevel gear housing. It operates within the drive shaft’s cathodic protection system and is particularly critical in saltwater or brackish water environments where electrochemical activity is more intense. Its absence or depletion exposes the aluminum and zinc parts of the drive shaft to accelerated corrosion, which can compromise the structural integrity of the drive shaft and cause serious failures that are difficult and costly to repair. Made of aluminum alloy, it is the right choice for sailing in saltwater, where it offers greater protection efficiency than zinc anodes. Replaces manufacturer part numbers 3853818 and 984513 in the OMC catalog.

When should this part be replaced?

The main indicator of depletion is a reduction in the anode’s volume: when it has lost approximately half its mass or has a very uneven and eroded surface, it must be replaced immediately. Inspection and replacement of the stern anodes should be performed at least once per boating season, or whenever the boat is taken out of the water for annual maintenance. Replacing the anode preventively at the start of each season is the most cost-effective measure to prevent corrosion of transmission components, which, if damaged, result in very expensive repairs.
