This zinc anode is specifically designed to protect the transom mirror of OMC Cobra outboard units manufactured between 1986 and 1993, directly replacing OMC reference 3853930. Its function is to act as a galvanic sacrificial anode: by oxidizing in a controlled manner, it protects the higher-value metallic components of the assembly — such as the transmission aluminum and the transom steel components — against electrochemical corrosion caused by immersion in saltwater, brackish water, or fresh water with minerals. Without effective cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion silently attacks the motor and transmission surfaces, causing severe structural damage and costly repairs.
