Description

Function and technical context

The spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the fuel and air mixture inside the combustion chamber, thus initiating the engine power cycle. It operates in the ignition system of the outboard engine, subjected to high-demand thermal and electrical cycles with each engine revolution. A spark plug in poor condition causes incomplete or irregular combustion, resulting in loss of power, increased fuel consumption and starting difficulties. In marine engines, where reliability on water is critical, maintaining spark plugs in perfect condition is an active safety measure. The NGK BPZ8HS-10 reference is manufactured to meet the requirements of Mercury, Mariner and MerCruiser engines that specify it in their maintenance tables.

When to replace this component?

The most common symptoms of a deteriorated spark plug in an outboard engine are difficult or intermittent starting, irregular idle operation, hesitation or cuts during acceleration and notable increase in fuel consumption. For marine engines in regular use, it is recommended to inspect and replace spark plugs every 100 operating hours or at the beginning of each boating season, whichever comes first. Changing spark plugs preventatively is one of the most economical and effective interventions to ensure starting in any condition and prevent breakdowns while underway.
