Function and technical context

The spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture within the combustion chamber of the outboard engine. It works in the ignition system, enduring continuous cycles of high voltage and extreme temperatures with each explosion. A bad spark plug causes incomplete or irregular combustion, which results in difficult starts, loss of power, increased fuel consumption and, in serious cases, damage to the piston or cylinder head due to detonation. The NGK LFR5A-11 reference is manufactured with high purity iridium or nickel electrode according to the NGK design, guaranteeing a consistent spark and long life in marine use conditions.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn spark plug in an outboard engine are difficult starting or requiring multiple attempts, rough idling, jerking or loss of power at full throttle, and a noticeable increase in petrol consumption. It is recommended to replace the spark plugs every 100 hours of operation or at the beginning of each boating season, whichever comes first. Changing them preventively is one of the most economical interventions in nautical maintenance and avoids being left without propulsion on the high seas due to a misfire.
