Description

Function and technical context

The NGK DR6HS spark plug is part of the outboard engine's ignition system, being responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the fuel and air mixture in the combustion chamber. Its correct operation is decisive to guarantee complete and efficient combustion in each engine cycle. A worn electrode or an electrode contaminated by carbon deposits causes misfires that result in loss of power, increased fuel consumption and difficulty starting the engine. The DR6HS reference from NGK is a resistance spark plug widely used in two-stroke outboard engines, designed to withstand the demanding working conditions of nautical propulsion.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the spark plug needs to be replaced are: difficult or irregular starting, unstable idling, jerking or sudden loss of power while cruising, and a noticeable increase in fuel consumption. As a general preventive maintenance guideline, it is recommended to inspect the spark plugs every 100 hours of operation or at the beginning of each nautical season, replacing them if they have eroded electrodes, carbon deposits or cracked porcelain. Changing the spark plug preventively is one of the most economical interventions that exist and avoids water breakdowns that can be much more costly.
