Description

Function and technical context

The NGK CR9EH-9 spark plug is the component responsible for generating the spark that initiates combustion in the cylinder of four-stroke outboard engines and jet skis. It is part of the ignition system and works under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure within the combustion chamber. A worn electrode or a contaminated platinum wire prevents complete combustion, which results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption and difficulty starting the engine. The designation "9" in the gap indicates an air gap of 0.9 mm, a critical dimension to guarantee correct spark in medium-high compression engines. Maintaining a spark plug in perfect condition is essential to preserve engine performance and avoid excessive loads on the ignition coil and CDI system.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged spark plug are difficult starting when cold, rattling or "miss" at idle, irregular acceleration and increased petrol consumption. Outboard and jet ski spark plugs should be checked every 100 hours of operation or at the beginning of each boating season, and replaced when the center electrode shows visible erosion, carbon deposits, or cracks in the ceramic insulator. Preventively changing the spark plug at each annual tune-up is the most economical way to avoid an unexpected stoppage in the water and protect the rest of the ignition system.
