Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BU8H spark plug is part of the outboard engine's ignition system, being responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Its correct operation directly determines the efficiency of the ignition cycle: a spark plug in poor condition causes irregular combustion, a notable loss of power and higher fuel consumption than normal. The NGK reference BU8H is a spark plug designed specifically for marine engines, where working conditions – saline humidity, variable load cycles and high thermal demands – require tighter materials and tolerances than in land applications. A failure in this component can result in starting difficulties, unstable idling or unexpected engine stops while sailing.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or faulty spark plug on an outboard engine include hard starting when cold, jerking or hesitation under load, rough idling, and unexplained increased fuel consumption. In two-stroke marine engines, it is recommended to check and replace the spark plugs every season or approximately every 100 hours of operation, while in four-stroke engines the interval can be extended according to the engine manufacturer's specifications, although it is advisable to inspect them during each seasonal maintenance. Replacing the spark plugs preventively is one of the most economical interventions in nautical maintenance and avoids navigation breakdowns that can be much more costly.
