NGK BR8HS SPARK PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The NGK BR8HS spark plug is part of the outboard engine's ignition system, being responsible for generating the electric spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder in each work cycle. It incorporates an integrated interference suppressor – indicated by the letter “R” in its reference – that protects electronic navigation equipment against electromagnetic disturbances generated during high voltage discharge. This component operates under extreme temperature and pressure conditions, withstanding thousands of electrical discharges per minute in both two-stroke and four-stroke engines. When the electrode erodes or the insulator suffers from carbon deposits, the spark loses intensity or becomes irregular, compromising the complete combustion cycle and the overall performance of the engine.
When to replace this part?
The most common signs that a marine spark plug needs replacement are: difficult starting or repeated failed priming attempts, unstable idling with irregular vibrations, jerks or sudden cuts when accelerating and clearly higher fuel consumption than usual. For outboard engines, it is recommended to inspect the spark plugs at each seasonal inspection and replace them every 100 hours of navigation or at least once a year. Since it is one of the lowest cost spare parts in nautical maintenance, renewing them preventively avoids misfires in the open sea and preserves the engine's efficiency in the long term.
