Function and technical context

This water pump kit is designed to keep the seawater cooling system in proper working order on 40, 45, 48 and 50 hp 2-cylinder outboard engines with Loopcharged and short tail configuration, manufactured between 1989 and 2005. The set incorporates a large diameter three-blade impeller that guarantees sufficient coolant flow to prevent overheating of the block and cylinder head during navigation. When the water pump loses performance – whether due to impeller wear, casing breakage or deterioration of the seals – the engine stops receiving the necessary cooling flow, which can lead to serious and irreversible damage to the sealing groups, pistons and distribution. As it is a complete kit, it includes all the components necessary for a comprehensive replacement of the pump, avoiding having to purchase individual parts from different sources.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of failure in an outboard water pump are the absence or notable reduction of the outlet water jet ("pilot"), the overheating warning light going off, or the detection of degraded or fragmented rubber parts during an inspection of the tail unit. The rubber impellers of the water pumps are recommended to be replaced every 200-300 hours of navigation or, at least, every two seasons of use, even if they do not show obvious signs of wear, since the aging of the elastomer can cause sudden breaks. Carrying out preventive replacement of this kit during each periodic maintenance is the most effective measure to avoid a breakdown due to overheating at sea, with the cost and risk that this entails.
