Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BPR6FS spark plug acts as the final element of the ignition system, generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber of the petrol engine. It works on the ignition system of MerCruiser inboard engines of the 3.7L, 165, 170, 180, 190 and 470 series, where the quality of the spark directly determines the combustion efficiency and engine response. A bad spark plug causes misfires, loss of power, increased fuel consumption and starting difficulties, especially in humid and salinity conditions typical of the marine environment. Its design is designed to resist corrosion and electromagnetic interference common in nautical installations, guaranteeing complete combustion in each engine cycle.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or defective spark plug include jerks and loss of speed at different revolutions, difficult starting when cold, irregular fuel consumption and abnormal engine vibration at idle. As a general rule of preventive maintenance on marine petrol engines, it is recommended to check and replace the spark plugs every season or approximately every 100 hours of navigation, which coincides with the annual inspection of the ignition system. Changing the spark plugs preventively, along with the high-tension cables, is one of the lowest-cost interventions that has the greatest impact on the reliability of the engine in navigation.
