Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BP7ES spark plug is part of the ignition system of the petrol outboard engine, being responsible for generating the electric spark that initiates the combustion of the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. Made with a nickel electrode and high-density ceramic insulator, it withstands the extreme conditions of saline humidity, vibrations and intense thermal cycles typical of the marine environment. Its glass sealer guarantees a permanent hermetic seal in the cylinder head, preventing compression leaks that would degrade engine performance. A bad spark plug directly compromises combustion efficiency, causing misfires, increased fuel consumption and starting difficulties, especially in cold conditions or after periods of prolonged inactivity.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn spark plug in marine engines include difficult or irregular starting, jerking and loss of power at low rpm, increased petrol consumption, and the presence of soot or deposits on the electrode when removing it for inspection. On frequently used outboard engines, it is recommended to check and replace the spark plugs every season or every 100 hours of operation, whichever comes first. Preventatively changing spark plugs before the boating season prevents unexpected breakdowns at sea and ensures reliable ignition at all times.
