Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BP5HS spark plug is the component of the ignition system responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder, triggering the combustion cycle necessary for the outboard engine to operate. It works under extreme conditions of high electrical voltage, temperature and repeated mechanical pressure, cycle after cycle, requiring specific electrode materials and geometry for the marine environment. When the electrode or insulator degrades, ignition becomes irregular or disappears completely, with direct consequences on available power, fuel consumption and starting reliability. The NGK reference BP5HS is specially designed for small and medium displacement two-stroke outboard engines, and its wide implementation in recreational and professional boating is a guarantee of proven reliability in marine applications.

When to replace this part?

The most frequent signs of a bad spark plug in an outboard engine are difficult or intermittent starting - especially when cold -, jerks and cuts at idle, abnormal vibrations in the engine, bluish or black smoke from the exhaust and clearly higher fuel consumption than usual. In two-stroke engines for marine use, it is recommended to inspect and renew the spark plugs every nautical season or every 100 hours of operation, whichever comes first, since the mixing oils and humidity accelerate the erosion of the central electrode and the carbonization of the insulator. Performing this change preventatively at the beginning of the season is the most cost-effective maintenance intervention to ensure propulsion at all times.
