Function and technical context

The NGK B9ES spark plug is part of the outboard engine's ignition system, being directly responsible for generating the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the cylinder. Its thermal grade 9 places it in the cold range, which makes it suitable for engines that work at high speeds and require efficient heat evacuation from the electrode. Poor ignition due to a damaged spark plug results in ignition failures, loss of power, increased fuel consumption and starting difficulties that can leave you stranded while sailing. The correct selection of the thermal grade is decisive to guarantee clean combustion and protect the engine against detonation or carbonization of the electrode.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn spark plug in an outboard include jerky or cut-off acceleration, difficult cold starting, unstable idling, and higher than usual fuel consumption. As a general rule of preventive maintenance, it is recommended to check and replace the spark plugs every season or every 100 hours of operation, whichever comes first, also checking the condition of the electrode and the gap at each inspection. Changing them preventively at the beginning of the season is the most common practice among skippers and naval mechanics to avoid navigation breakdowns.
