Description

Function and technical context

The NGK B6HS spark plug is part of the ignition system in two-stroke engines, being the element responsible for generating the high-tension electric spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in each engine cycle. It works under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature inside the combustion chamber, continuously supporting thousands of electrical discharges per minute. Its correct operation is decisive for the quality of combustion: a worn or contaminated electrode compromises the ignition, leading to loss of power, increased consumption and, in advanced cases, damage to the piston and cylinder due to incomplete combustion. The NGK B6HS reference is approved for Yamaha DT series outboard engines and for Mercury and MerCruiser two-stroke propellers with equivalent performance, being one of the most popular spark plugs in the small and medium marine displacement segment.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs that the spark plug requires replacement are: difficult starts, especially when cold, misfiring or jerking at idle, irregular vibrations under load and the presence of carbon deposits on the electrode when removing it for visual inspection. In two-stroke outboard engines, it is advisable to check the spark plug during each seasonal maintenance and replace it approximately every 100 hours of use, or sooner if any of these symptoms appear. Changing it preventively is the simplest and most economical intervention to ensure a clean ignition and avoid unwanted stops in navigation.
