Description

Function and technical context

The Champion RS12PYP spark plug is part of the engine's ignition system and its mission is to generate the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder at the precise moment of the work cycle. Developed with superior thermal resistance technology, its electrode withstands the temperature and vibration conditions typical of high-performance marine engines without excessive accumulation of carbon deposits or premature erosion. A bad spark plug causes incomplete combustion which results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption, starting difficulties and, in serious cases, damage to the pistons or the catalyst. Its reliability is especially critical in marine applications, where the possibility of immediate assistance in the event of a breakdown is limited and humidity and salinity conditions accelerate the deterioration of ignition components.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the spark plugs of a marine engine need replacement are: difficult or irregular starting, jerking and misfiring at idle or under load, perceptible increase in fuel consumption and the presence of black smoke from the exhaust. In marine engines with intensive duty cycles, it is recommended to inspect the spark plugs at each seasonal maintenance and replace them at the interval indicated by the engine manufacturer, generally every 100 hours of use or at least once a year. Changing spark plugs preventatively before the boating season is a low-cost measure that prevents unplanned downtime on the water and preserves engine performance at full power.
