Description

Function and technical context

The NGK DCPR6EIX is an iridium spark plug integrated into the ignition system of 4-stroke outboard engines, whose mission is to generate the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber in each engine cycle. The central electrode made of iridium – a metal of exceptional hardness and a very high melting point – guarantees a precise, stable and long-lasting spark, superior to that of conventional nickel electrodes, which translates into more complete combustion and greater energy efficiency throughout the useful life of the spark plug. The fine geometry of the iridium electrode reduces the breakdown voltage needed to generate the spark, relieving the load on the ignition coil and the rest of the engine's electrical circuit. Poor ignition or a spark plug in poor condition directly compromises the available power, increases fuel consumption and, in the most serious cases, can cause damage to the catalyst or cause engine detonation.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs that a spark plug has reached the limit of its useful life are: difficult or repeated starting, irregular idling with vibrations or rattling, jerks and hesitations during acceleration and a noticeable increase in fuel consumption. For 4-stroke outboard engines with iridium spark plugs, the recommended replacement interval is usually between 100 and 200 hours of operation, although it is advisable to change them in advance if any of the above symptoms appear. Replacing the spark plugs preventively at the beginning of each nautical season is one of the lowest cost interventions available to ensure reliable engine starting and avoid a breakdown at sea.
