This oil seal is a critical sealing component in marine propulsion systems, responsible for containing the engine lubricant and preventing leaks at rotation and sealing points. It works in the lubrication system, maintaining the integrity of the oil in demanding marine operating conditions where vibrations and pressure changes are constant. Its failure allows salt water to enter the crankcase and loss of lubricant, which causes accelerated wear of internal components, corrosion and eventual engine seizure.

When to replace this part?

Common symptoms of degradation include oil stains around the drive shaft, a decrease in lubricant level without apparent cause, and the presence of a milky emulsion in the oil (indicating water ingress). It is recommended that this seal be inspected during each seasonal maintenance, especially on heavily used boats or after prolonged periods of inactivity. Preventatively replacing this seal avoids costly offshore repairs and ensures engine block durability.
