Function and technical context

Piston rings are segmenting components that seal the space between the piston and cylinder walls in internal combustion engines. Its main function is to guarantee the tightness of the combustion chamber, maintaining the compression pressure necessary for an efficient explosion of the fuel and preventing combustion gases from leaking into the crankcase. They work in the engine's lubrication and compression system, subjected to extreme temperatures and continuous cyclic movements. Without these rings in good condition, there is a loss of compression pressure, increased oil consumption, blue smoke in the exhaust and accelerated deterioration of the cylinder walls.

When to replace this part?

The piston rings show wear when there is excessive oil consumption, a noticeable loss of compression measured in the cylinder, or visible smoke in the exhaust even with a hot engine. In marine engines that are frequently used or subjected to high revolutions, it is recommended to check the condition of the rings every 500-800 hours of operation, and replace them preventively during any reconstruction of the mobile group. An early change of this kit avoids progressive damage to the cylinder that would considerably increase the repair cost.
