They work within the system of cylinders and pistons, being essential for the engine to develop its nominal power and maintain controlled fuel and oil consumption. If they wear or fracture, the compression pressure decreases significantly, causing loss of power, increased oil consumption and engine overheating.

Piston ring wear manifests itself with symptoms such as bluish smoke in the exhaust, abnormal oil consumption between changes, progressive loss of power during acceleration, and irregular engine vibration under load. In nautical applications with intense use, it is advisable to check the condition of the rings during each seasonal maintenance and replace them preventively when the engine has accumulated many hours of operation or after disassembling the engine block.
