Function and technical context

The side power trim control is the control switch mounted on the side of the outboard motor that allows the skipper to adjust the tilt angle of the engine from the boat, acting directly on the hydraulic trim and tilt system. It is part of the electrical control circuit of the power trim/tilt system, sending the signal to the relay and the hydraulic pump to raise or lower the drive axle with respect to the transom. A failure in this component makes it impossible to control the propulsion angle manually, which compromises both the performance of the boat - top speed, fuel consumption, gliding behavior - and safety in beaching maneuvers and navigation in shallow waters. As it is an element exposed to humidity, splashes and constant vibrations, its electrical integrity is decisive for the correct functioning of the tilt system.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of wear or failure in a side power trim control are a lack of response when pressing the button (the motor does not go up or down), intermittent or erratic operation of the trim, and the appearance of visible corrosion on the contacts or on the switch housing. It is recommended to check this component during each seasonal maintenance, checking the condition of the electrical contacts and the sealing against humidity. Replacing it preventively at the first signs of poor contact avoids being immobilized in port or, worse still, without trim control during navigation.
