Function and technical context

The aluminum anode is a critical cathodic protection component in Mercury, Mariner and MerCruiser engines operating in salt water. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion of the engine block, cylinder head, cooling pipes and other nobler metal parts. When exposed to saline electrolyte, the anode degrades in a controlled manner rather than allowing oxidation to attack the engine body, thus preserving the structural integrity of the cooling system and the tightness of critical joints.

When to replace this part?

The anode must be inspected at the beginning of each navigation season and replaced when it has lost more than 50% of its volume or shows accelerated erosion. Symptoms that indicate a need for replacement include white or greenish corrosion deposits around the engine block, loss of efficient cooling, or visible corrosion in exposed aluminum spots. Preventive change is recommended every 2-3 years in salt waters with high mineral content, or after 300-400 hours of intensive navigation, to prevent galvanic oxidation from compromising the tightness of the engine and generating high-cost repairs in port or at sea.
