Function and technical context

The Mercury 17264 sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection component designed to safeguard the cooling systems and submerged metal surfaces of Mercury 60 hp engines. It works within the engine cooling circuit, where it acts as an electrochemical barrier against galvanic corrosion caused by prolonged contact with salt or brackish water. Its function is to oxidize preferably before the critical aluminum and other metal parts of the engine, avoiding perforations, coolant leaks and premature deterioration of the cylinder liner, gaskets and water passages. Without this anode, marine corrosion would quickly penetrate the vital components, compromising the tightness of the system and the reliability of the engine in navigation.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the beginning and end of each navigation season, and replaced when they show visible wear, accelerated erosion, or have lost more than 50% of their mass. In salty waters or waters with a high mineral content, consumption is faster and may require more frequent changes or even mid-season if sailing intensively. Preventive replacement of the anode is the most economical investment in marine maintenance: its cost is minimal compared to that of cylinder head repairs, changing water seals or rebuilding engine blocks damaged by advanced marine corrosion.
