Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cooling systems of marine engines operating in salt water. Its main function is to protect the metal parts of the engine against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that degrades aluminum, copper and steel when they come into contact with saline electrolytes. The anode is installed inside the engine's cooling ducts, where salt water constantly circulates, and acts as a "guardian" absorbing corrosion instead of the critical parts of the block and cylinder head. Without this active protection, advanced marine corrosion would compromise the tightness of the cooling system, causing internal leaks, overheating and possible water entry into the combustion chambers.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes are gradually consumed during the saltwater boating season, losing protective material as they perform their defensive function. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at the beginning of each season and replace it if it has lost more than 50% of its mass or if it presents advanced corrosion on its surface. Preventive replacement at the end of each season is the safest practice in frequently used boats, preventing the anode from being completely exhausted during navigation and leaving the engine unprotected against the corrosive attack of salt water.
