Function and technical context

The aluminum anode is a critical component in the corrosion protection of Mercury, Mariner and MerCruiser marine engines. It acts as a galvanic sacrifice in the salt or brackish water circuit, neutralizing the electrochemical corrosion that affects the submerged metal parts of the engine. By being continuously exposed to water, the anode oxidizes in a controlled manner rather than allowing corrosion to attack higher value structural components such as crankcases, cooling pipes and cylinder heads. Without effective anodic protection, advanced marine corrosion can compromise the integrity of the cooling system and cause internal leaks.

When to replace this part?

The aluminum anode must be inspected after each sailing season and replaced when it shows significant loss of material or is reduced to less than 50% of its mass. The consumption rate of the anode depends on the salinity of the water, the pH and the electrochemical activity of the engine, but as a general rule it is advisable to check its condition during each spring maintenance. Preventatively replacing the anode before it is completely depleted ensures continued protection and prevents costly corrosion repairs to internal engine components.
