Function and technical context

The aluminum anode is a critical component in the Mercury Verado marine engine cathodic protection system. It acts as a galvanic sacrifice within the cooling circuit, preferably oxidizing before the corrosive ions present in salt water, thus preventing corrosion from attacking the metal surfaces of the engine, crankcase and internal systems. Its presence guarantees the structural integrity of vital components such as cooling pipes, internal passages of the block and wet areas of the combustion system. Without this anode, accelerated marine corrosion would quickly compromise the tightness of the engine, causing water infiltration, internal oxidation and progressive loss of power.

When to replace this part?

The aluminum anode requires visual inspection regularly during saltwater operations; When it shows erosion of more than 50% of its volume or shows superficial detachments, it must be replaced immediately. It is recommended to replace this component at least once per intensive saltwater boating season, or every 200-300 hours of operation in this environment, to maintain effective cathodic protection. Preventive replacement is economically advantageous over engine repairs resulting from severe internal corrosion, which can result in costly breakdowns during voyages.
