The Mercury 821629 sacrificial anode is a protective component installed in MerCruiser engine cooling systems, both saltwater and freshwater. Its function is to absorb the electrochemical corrosion that occurs naturally when different metals come into contact with conductive water, thus protecting the internal parts of the engine made of nobler materials. By degrading in a controlled manner, this anode prevents corrosion from attacking cooling passages, gaskets and other critical system components, significantly extending engine life and ensuring reliable operation in demanding marine conditions.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be checked regularly at the beginning of each sailing season and replaced when they show visible wear greater than 50% of their volume or when they show signs of material shedding. In saltwater boats or boats with intensive navigation, it is recommended to change the anode every 12 months or at the end of the summer season, while in fresh water the interval may be longer. Preventive replacement of the anode is an economical measure that avoids costly repairs to the engine core due to corrosion, being especially critical during prolonged navigation or in areas of highly mineralized water.
