Function and technical context
The high-consistency PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) grease is specifically formulated for nautical applications where protection against corrosion, saline humidity and extreme mechanical loads is essential. It acts as a solid lubricant in joints, shafts, pins, couplings and steering mechanisms of outboard motors and boats in general, reducing metal-to-metal friction and sealing surfaces against water penetration. The Teflon compound dispersed in the grease base forms a low-friction protective film that remains stable under pressure, vibration and prolonged thermal cycling, which is common in marine engines in continuous operation. Its absence or deterioration can result in accelerated wear of moving components, seizure of mechanisms and galvanic corrosion in critical areas of the transmission and rudder.
When to replace or reapply this grease?
The most common symptoms that indicate that PTFE grease has lost its properties are: squeaking or unusual resistance when turning the rudder or control cables, visible corrosion on pins and joints, and excessive play in transmission couplings due to non-lubricated wear. It is recommended to reapply during each seasonal maintenance - at least once a year - to all lubrication points on the engine, steering and trim mechanisms, and always after a beaching or prolonged exposure to salt water. Preventively applying PTFE grease at each service prevents unexpected mechanical breakdowns and significantly extends the life of shafts, ball joints and joints in aggressive marine environments.
