Cathodic protection in Volvo Penta IPS propulsion systems, models IPS-A, IPS-B, IPS-C, IPS-D, IPS-E and IPS-F. The aluminum anode acts as an electrochemical sacrificial element, preferably oxidizing to protect the pod casing, shafts and propellers against galvanic corrosion in salt and brackish water. Note: Fitments indicate stainless steel, but this product is marine aluminum alloy; has been described in accordance with verified technical data.

Description

Function and technical context

This aluminum anode acts as an electrochemical sacrificial element within the cathodic protection system of the Volvo Penta IPS propulsion assemblies, interposing itself between the salt water and the noble metals of the submerged drive train. Having a more negative electrochemical potential than stainless steel, bronze or structural aluminum in the tail, it is this anode that preferentially oxidizes, leaving the critical surfaces of the pod, axle and steering elements intact. Without active and well-maintained cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can degrade high-cost components such as the pod casing, propellers or hubs in just a few weeks, compromising both the safety of the boat and the propulsive efficiency. The marine aluminum alloy used in this replacement offers a uniform and predictable dissolution, guaranteeing stable protective coverage throughout the entire sailing season in salt or brackish waters.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode must be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when it is observed that it has been reduced to a thin, irregular core or with the surface completely consumed, it no longer offers sufficient protection. As a preventive maintenance standard, aluminum anodes in IPS systems should be inspected when the boat is taken ashore at the end of each season and replaced at least once a year or sooner if saltwater navigation has been intensive. Replacing the anode preventively during winter grounding is the most economical measure to avoid the replacement of structural components of the propulsion system, the cost of which is several times higher.
