Description

Function and technical context

The rectangular sacrificial anodes act as an electrochemical shield from the vessel's submerged metal elements, attracting to themselves galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the hull, shaft, propeller or bronze and stainless steel fittings. This rectangular anode—with dimensions 200×100×30 mm—is installed directly on flat surfaces of the hull or on keels, rudders and skids, offering a large contact surface that maximizes cathodic protection. Without active galvanic protection in good condition, corrosion advances silently and rapidly, especially in salt or brackish water environments, potentially compromising the structural integrity of high-cost and difficult-to-access parts.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the reduction of its mass by more than 50% compared to the initial size, or the appearance of visible corrosion (pitting, orange or whitish stains) on the metal parts it should protect. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season - usually during the annual docking - and replace them preventively even if they are not completely consumed, since an exhausted anode in the middle of the season leaves the boat's metals unprotected for weeks. Replacing the rectangular anode at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid severe structural damage to the hull or steering appendages.
