Description

Function and technical context

This sacrificial anode works within the cathodic protection system of the bow thruster in Volvo Penta propulsion installations, acting as a galvanic element that absorbs electrolytic corrosion before it affects higher-cost metal components such as the shaft, propeller or thruster casing. In marine environments, the difference in electrical potential between different metals submerged in water—especially in salt or brackish water—generates galvanic currents that progressively destroy the less noble metals; The anode gets in the way of this process, consuming itself. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is critical to preserve the structural integrity of the bow propulsion system, avoiding irreversible damage to high-value parts that require beaching for repair.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode needs to be replaced is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it has reached the limit of its protective capacity and must be replaced immediately. For installations in salt water or in areas with high electrical conductivity, it is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at each beaching or at least once per nautical season; In fresh water consumption is slower, but the annual review is still essential. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the shaft or bow thruster, the repair or replacement of which involves a much higher cost.
