Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode 41100098 works within the cathodic protection system of the bow thruster, acting as a preferential element in the electrochemical corrosion process. Being made of a metal with a higher anodic potential than the structural components of the propulsion assembly, the anode wears out in a controlled and deliberate manner, diverting towards itself the galvanic attack that would otherwise affect the propeller, shaft and the submerged metal parts of the propulsion system. This protection is especially critical in vessels that navigate in salt or brackish water, environments where the conductivity of the medium drastically accelerates galvanic corrosion processes. Without this component in perfect condition, the metallic elements of the propulsion assembly are exposed to progressive degradation that can compromise the structural integrity and performance of the system.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode needs to be replaced is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its initial volume, the protection capacity decreases significantly and it must be replaced before it is completely exhausted. As a general rule of preventive maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning of each sailing season and replace it at least once a year, especially in areas of high salinity or on boats with on-board electrical systems that can accelerate consumption. Replacing the anode in a timely manner is one of the lowest cost interventions in nautical maintenance, and avoids propeller or propulsion shaft repairs that can be considerably more expensive.
