Description

Function and technical context

The flywheel brake wrench is an essential specialized tool for immobilizing the flywheel of the outboard or inboard engine during maintenance operations that require applying tightening or loosening torque to the crankshaft and its associated components. It works by mechanically blocking the magnetic flywheel so that it does not rotate while the technician works on the ignition assembly, the central crankshaft nut or the attached transmission elements. Without this tool, it is impossible to correctly tighten the torque specified by the manufacturer, compromising the integrity of the rotating assembly and risking damage to the ignition system or the crankshaft itself. Its use is also necessary when replacing the magnetic flywheel, the stator magnets or any component that requires disassembling the assembly with the engine out of service.

When to use or replace this tool?

The flywheel brake wrench must be used in each intervention that involves the disassembly or tightening of the magnetic flywheel, the crankshaft nut or components of the ignition system that require rotational locking. Unlike consumable parts, the wear of this tool appears when the claws or the body of the key show deformations, cracks or looseness that prevent a firm and safe locking, a situation that can cause slipping and damage to the steering wheel or injuries to the operator. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the tool each maintenance season and replace it if there is any sign of deterioration: tooling in perfect condition guarantees safe interventions and tightening to the correct torque, avoiding serious breakdowns at sea due to poor assembly.
