Function and technical context

This sacrificial anode belongs to Lewmar's 140TT series and is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a galvanic barrier between submerged metal components and salt or brackish water. Its function is to oxidize in a controlled manner before the nobler metal surfaces of the engine or transmission, preserving propellers, shafts, flanges and housings against electrolytic corrosion. When to replace this part?
