Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are essential components in the cathodic protection of propellers, shafts and other submerged metal elements on vessels with Kamewa propulsion systems. This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial metal, corroding in a controlled manner to protect the most expensive structural parts of the propulsion assembly against galvanic corrosion caused by contact between dissimilar metals in aquatic environments. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is critical to preserve the integrity of the tail shaft, the propeller and the bronze or aluminum accessories of the propulsion system, avoiding pitting and irreparable damage that compromises the maneuverability and safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the Kamewa anode needs replacement is the reduction in its mass by more than 50%, at which point it loses effective protective capacity and leaves the noble metals of the propellant assembly exposed. It is recommended to inspect and, in most cases, replace the anode at least once a season or at each annual stranding, since its useful life depends directly on the type of water (salt, brackish or fresh), the hours of navigation and the density of the galvanic current of the environment. Replacing it preventively at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical and safest practice: the cost of an anode is minimal compared to repairing or replacing a propeller or shaft damaged by galvanic corrosion.
