Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are essential cathodic protection elements in naval propulsion and drive systems such as those integrated by Kamewa in its controllable pitch propellers and azimuthal drives. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically before the structural metal parts of the system - axles, casings, propeller hubs - do so, protecting them from galvanic corrosion produced by the potential difference between different metals in contact with water. In Kamewa installations, where stainless steels, bronzes and aluminum alloys coexist in a highly aggressive marine environment, correct cathodic protection using suitable anodes is decisive to preserve the mechanical integrity of the assembly and avoid structural damage that requires costly repair. Without anodic protection in good condition, galvanic corrosion can silently attack the noble components of the propulsion system, compromising its operation and safety.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that an anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost more than 50% of its mass, has cracks, has fragmented, or has been reduced to a metal core with hardly any active material. Unlike other components, sacrificial anodes are consumed in a progressive and controlled manner: this wear is precisely proof that they are doing their job. It is recommended to inspect the anode at each beaching or at least once per nautical season, and replace it preventively whenever the level of wear exceeds that 50% threshold, regardless of the time elapsed. Renewing the anode at each annual tune-up is the most economical practice to ensure that the Kamewa propulsion system is protected throughout the campaign without the risk of undetected corrosion.
