ANODE FOR KAMEWA
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are essential cathodic protection elements in any marine propulsion system, and this anode for Kamewa fulfills that function in this brand's propellers and drive units. Its mission is to rust in a controlled manner to protect the structural metal parts - axles, propellers, bronze or aluminum bodies - against galvanic corrosion caused by the action of salt, brackish or fresh water. By acting as the active electrode of the galvanic pair, the anode concentrates all the electrochemical degradation on itself, preserving the integrity of the most expensive components of the Kamewa propulsion assembly. Without adequate cathodic protection, corrosion silently advances on the shaft and propeller, compromising the structural safety of the vessel.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign of replacement is the reduction in the volume of the anode: when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, it must be replaced without delay to ensure effective cathodic protection. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at each beaching and, at least, change it once per nautical season, since a depleted anode leaves the base metals completely exposed to galvanic corrosion. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid severe damage to the shaft or propeller, the repair or replacement of which involves a much higher cost.
