KAMEWA ANODE PLATE
Description
Function and technical context
This Kamewa plate anode with reference TEN02453 is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a sacrificial electrode on submerged metal surfaces. Its mission is to concentrate on itself the electrochemical oxidation process that would otherwise attack more expensive structural components such as the tail shaft, rudder, propeller or the Kamewa propeller casing. Being made of a highly reactive alloy, this anode corrodes in a controlled manner, protecting the noble metal from the rest of the propellant assembly. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can compromise the structural integrity of critical transmission and propulsion parts in a relatively short time, especially in salty or brackish waters.
When to replace this part?
Plate anodes should be inspected at least once a season, or each time the boat leaves the water for a beaching or hull inspection. The unequivocal sign that a change is necessary is when the anode has lost more than 50% of its mass, presents an irregular and friable surface, or has completely disappeared. A depleted anode leaves the adjacent surfaces of the Kamewa propellant unprotected, which can lead to irreversible corrosion pitting on parts that are difficult to access and require high replacement costs; Replacing it preventively during each annual maintenance is the most effective measure to avoid serious breakdowns during navigation.
