Function and Technical Context

The water pump body is the structural component that houses the impeller and internal passages of the seawater cooling system in outboard engines. Its function is to channel and direct the water flow captured from outside toward the heat exchanger or engine block jacket, ensuring the engine maintains optimal operating temperature throughout navigation. A deteriorated or cracked pump body causes loss of cooling flow rate, which results in engine overheating, activation of the temperature-based rev limiter, and in the most severe cases, deformation of cylinder head gaskets or irreversible damage to the block. This reference 438543 is compatible with Johnson, Evinrude, Mercury/Mariner/Mercruiser and Yamaha engines, covering a wide range of recreational and professional propulsion units.

When to Replace This Part?

The most common symptoms of a water pump body in poor condition are: presence of visible leaks in the pump area, reduced or irregular cooling water flow rate at the telltale outlet, cavitation noise coming from the pump, and high temperature signal on the gauge. It is recommended to inspect the pump body each time the impeller is replaced—typically every 200-300 hours of operation or at the beginning of each season—as internal cracks or wall erosion may go unnoticed until causing total failure underway. Replacing the pump body preventively along with the water kit is the practice recommended by marine service centers to avoid costly breakdowns offshore.
