Description

Function and technical context

The J-prop TEN01032 sacrificial anode is a cathodic protection component designed specifically for propellers and propulsion shafts on motor boats. Its function is to act as a sacrificial electrode, oxidizing in a controlled manner to protect the noblest metallic parts of the propulsion - propeller, shaft and horn - against galvanic corrosion caused by sea or brackish water. Without this element, the structural metals of the propulsion system are exposed to electrochemical corrosion, which can lead to severe pitting, material loss and, ultimately, premature failure of the propeller or tailshaft. Its correct assembly in the area of the bow or in the propeller guarantees that the degradation falls on the anode and not on the critical parts of the transmission.

When to replace this part?

The symptoms of an exhausted anode are visible to the naked eye: uniform whitish or grayish color, volume reduced by more than 50% compared to the new anode, or completely smooth surface without active porosity. The general recommendation among naval maintenance technicians is to check and replace the propeller anodes at least once a season, or sooner if the boat remains in areas with high electrical conductivity of the water or near port facilities with eddy currents. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid irreparable damage to the propeller and propulsion shaft, parts whose repair or replacement involves a much higher cost.
