Description

Function and technical context

The J-prop sacrificial anode acts as a cathodic protector on the propeller and drive shaft, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the structural metal components of the propulsion. It works within the propulsion system, specifically in the submerged area of the boat where the difference in electrical potential between different metals—stainless steel, bronze, aluminum—generates destructive galvanic currents. Its presence is critical: without active and well-maintained anodic protection, premature wear of the propeller, shaft and propulsion hub can occur in a single sailing season. The reference TEN01031 is made of zinc, the standard material for boats in salt and brackish water, with an alloy composition that guarantees uniform and predictable consumption throughout the season.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the J-prop anode needs replacement is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it has stopped protecting effectively and should be replaced immediately. As a precautionary rule, propeller anodes should be inspected at least once mid-season and replaced at least every full sailing season, regardless of apparent condition, as a depleted anode exposes the propeller and shaft to pitting and irreversible galvanic erosion. Replacing the anode preventatively at each seasonal grounding is the most economical measure to avoid costly replacement of corrosion-damaged propellers or shafts.
