Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for Isoterm water heater (reference TEN01452) is the cathodic protective element installed inside the onboard boiler tank, whose mission is to absorb galvanic corrosion before it affects the metal walls of the heater. It acts as a sacrificial electrode within the vessel's domestic hot water system, attracting to itself the corrosive ions present in the seawater or brackish water that circulates through the exchanger. Without this component, the inner hull of the boiler is exposed to electrolytic corrosion, which can cause punctures, water leaks and the complete unusability of the hot water equipment on board.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a depleted anode in a marine boiler are the appearance of reddish or brownish sediments in the hot water, a metallic smell in the domestic water, small leaks in the heater casing or visible corrosion in the anode connection area when uncovering it for inspection. Marine heater manufacturers, including Isoterm, recommend checking and replacing the sacrificial anode at least once per nautical season or every 12 months of use, advancing the replacement if the anode has lost more than 50% of its mass during visual inspection. Changing the TEN01452 anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid complete replacement of the boiler, a considerably more costly breakdown.
