DETROIT SILVER PAINT
Description
Function and technical context
Detroit Silver Inboard Paint is a specialized coating developed for the protection and finishing of inboard engines, specifically the Detroit Diesel range. Its main function is to protect the metal surfaces of the engine block and its external components against corrosion, oxidation and aggression from the marine environment, where saline humidity and thermal changes accelerate the deterioration of the metal. Applied directly on cast iron and steel, it acts as a physical barrier that preserves the integrity of the engine and facilitates visual identification of the state of the assembly at each inspection. A deteriorated finish not only affects aesthetics, but allows rust to advance towards the base metal, compromising threads, manhole covers and gasket surfaces.
When to replace or reapply this paint?
The most common symptoms that indicate the need to reapply this coating are the appearance of blisters, peeling, surface rust stains or areas where the silver color has disappeared, leaving the metal exposed. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the engine finish at each seasonal maintenance, especially after wintering in high humidity areas or use in salt water. Preventatively reapplying paint to affected areas before rust penetrates the metal is the most efficient practice to avoid higher-cost structural repairs.
