Description

Function and technical context

The impeller is the heart of the engine's water pump, responsible for pushing the coolant through the internal galleries of the engine block and maintaining a constant circulation that dissipates the heat generated during combustion. This centrifugal turbine, driven directly by the engine shaft, works within the fresh water cooling circuit in high displacement engines, ensuring that no area of the engine exceeds safe operating temperatures. Without an impeller in perfect condition, circulation is compromised, causing localized overheating in the combustion chambers, accelerated corrosion of the water galleries and, in severe cases, complete seizure of the engine with catastrophic consequences for propulsion.

When to replace this part?

Water pump impellers suffer progressive wear due to cavitation, abrasion of particles suspended in the coolant and hardening of the rubber of the blades after years of exposure to high temperatures. Common symptoms include unexplained elevated engine temperature, weak water output from the cooling system discharge port, or obvious loss of thermal dissipation efficiency even with the thermostat functioning correctly. It is recommended to inspect the impeller every intensive navigation season and replace it preventively every 400-600 hours of operation or when visible wear is observed on the blades; Timely replacement prevents much more costly engine repairs caused by prolonged overheating.
